It is hard to start talking about our stuff. I know this because when God whispered to me 5 years ago that I would be sharing my story to people- long before I had even come to terms with it myself- I was overwhelmed, scared and in this stage of complete denial. But God wanted to take this bad part of my life and use it for something good. I was the only thing standing in the way!
So there’s this girl in the bible. She doesn’t have a name, at least any that is recorded, but her story is very well known. She’s kind of an outcast, all alone at the well to get water. The well back in these days was a type of social gathering place where the women would meet up but this woman wasn’t a part of the in-crowd. She was all alone. Now, Jesus was traveling to Galilee and stopped at this particular well where a woman was. Jesus and this woman have a conversation and after talking to him for only a short while she has this light bulb moment of who he really is, so she goes running back to town and proclaims to the people there: “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.” No longer ashamed or afraid what people thought! When she knew who he was- and that he had talked to her, it didn’t matter her past or what others thought- she HAD to go tell as many people as she could. And what was the result: John 4:39: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
If I never told my story to anyone, I would be protected from judgment, from criticism, from the potential of not being liked, but then, all that I went thru, everything that happened, it was for nothing. Instead, He is bringing something good out of the bad choices I made- because he will use everything we’ve got, there isn’t anything he will let be for nothing! And just like the sunrise can be seen by tons of people for miles and miles, our stories will shine a light on what darkness we have come out of. We are the ones who get to tell what we’ve been thru and how he has lifted us out of the pit. With our stories we are the ones who get to speak of His love, His mercy, and His grace- and if we don’t, who will?
Ephesians 5:8-13 For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is the light that makes everything visible.
